How to put Micro SD Card in computer without adapter

Many people are using Micro SD Cards in their Cameras or Smartphones in order to store their images. However, at some point in time the Micro-SD cards run out of storage space. That's when you want to transfer the images from the Micro-SD card to a external hard-drive, a computer, or a Laptop. Usually you can do that by using an Micro-SD card adapter which you can connect via USB port to your computer or laptop. Some computers and laptops even have a Micro-SD card slot built in. You just need to plug the card in and you are ready to transfer the files on it to your computer or laptop.

If your computer or laptop does not have a built-in Micro-SD slot or you do not have access to a Micro-SD card USB adpater there is still another way you can use in order to transfer files from the Micro-SD card to a digital storage medium. All you need isa phone which has a Micro-SD card slot and USB cable to connect your phone to a computer. In order to transfer the files just follow these steps:

  1. Put the Micro-SD card in your smartphone or phone
  2. Then you need to connect your phone to a computer by using the USB cable which is compatible with your phone
  3. On your computer or laptop you click on the "Phone" icon which should pop up in the bottom-right.
  4. Identify the files you want to transfer from the Micro-SD card in the folder on your phone and then transfer them to your computer or laptop

The process of transfering data from the Micro-SD card to your laptop or computer can take quite a while as Micro-SD cards can store Gigabytes of data. Some of them hav storage capacities of up to 128 Gigabytes.

Changing to larger capacity SD card? How to transfer data from old to new card?

If you want to change to a larger SD card you have to follow these s

Step 1: Before changing the memory card: Create a data backup of your Android

Before replacing your old storage card with a new one, back up all your data, such as photos, music and backups, to your computer or cloud storage.

Step 2: Remove storage card from your Android smartphone

Before you remove the memory card from your Android phone, you should "eject" it from the system to avoid data loss. This option can be found under different menu items, depending on how up-to-date your Android operating system is. Here is an example:

  • Open the "Settings" item in the Android menu.
  • Here tap on "Storage" to get to the option "Remove SD card".
  • Select this to eject the card in the system. After you have received a confirmation, you can safely remove the micro SD card.

Step 3: Buy a new SD card – you need to be aware of these points

SD cards of the "Micro-SD" type are used in almost all smartphones. The simple Micro-SD card has a maximum data volume of 2 GByte, which quickly reaches its limits for high-resolution pictures and videos. Better is a MicroSDHC card, which can hold up to 32 GByte. Modern memory cards are called "MicroSDXC" and hold up to 2 TB of data.

  • If you want to store large data such as HD movies or high-resolution pictures, you should pay attention to a fast data transfer rate. In the next practical tip we will show you all the information about SD card speed and classes.
  • In our Best List you will find all tested SD cards clearly arranged – you will find the best price in our price comparison.

Step 4: Insert new SD card and format if necessary

When installing your SD card, make sure that the card is inserted heading in the correct direction. In most cases this is printed on both the smartphone and the memory card.

  • Once you have inserted your micro SD card, it should normally be ready for immediate use.
  • If not, it still needs to be formatted.

External hard drives with integrated card reader

A hard disk with a card reader on board would certainly be a good solution, at least if you don't have an external hard disk yet. In this case you might even accept a higher price. However if you already have one hard disk you probably don't have much use for a second one.

Sooner or later we all will probably have to buy such a device. Even Canon has now launched a similar device, the Canon Connect. How good or bad the product is is not subject of this article though.

But the following devices have been tested:

  • Intenso Memory 2 Move Pro
  • WD My Passport Wireless Pro

The ratings for such devices generally seem to be somewhat mixed. Whereby some things are also due to wrong ideas of the users. For example, most users would not even try to sort out or view pictures on their mobile phone. With a solution like this your only concern is the backup of the images, if it works nobody really cares about the rest.

Another Solution

This solution you could call maybe a multimedia sharing box or something. These parts don't have their own memory, but have a battery, USB port, WLAN and SD card reader. Thus, one can comfortably connect the memory card and the hard disk and copy the data from the card to the hard disk by an app. A stick or an SSD would be even better than a hard disk, as hard disks are a bit more vulnerable due to the moving parts.

It gets a little more complicated with CF cards, as cheap devices only support SD. But with a USB hub and a CF card reader this could also be possible. Originally we found three devices that were reasonably priced and offered what we wanted. Unfortunately there is only one of them available now and another one on the market:

  • Kingston MobileLite
  • RAVPower (also available in white)
  • RAVPower 5G

We decided to use the RAVPower. Meanwhile there is a new version of the device, which is called RAVPower 5G. The 5G has a little less battery capacity, which should play a role mainly when used as a powerbank. But it has a faster (5G) WLAN, which should increase the transfer rate in general. But the most important and exciting new feature is the SD card backup at the touch of a button. So you can save yourself the detour via the app. If we didn't already have the part, it would probably be worth the extra charge.

We ordered the 5G in the meantime, but have come to the conclusion that we don't want the backup at the push of a button. In the end we check the app once again to make sure everything has been transferred.

How the backup with RAVPower and the FilehubPlus app works exactly, is demonstrated in the following video:

How many pics does a 16gb SD card hold?

How many pictures you can store on a memory card depends on several factors. First is Memory card capacity; removable storage media for digital cameras are offered in various sizes: Compact Flash (8, 16, 32, 48, 64, 96, 128, 192 MB); Smartmedia (4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 MB); Sony Memory Stick (4, 8, 16, 32, 64 MB); IBM Microdrive (340 MB).

The second factor is Resolution, file type and compression image resolution (number of pixels) determines the file size. In addition, it also depends on whether the digital images are stored on the data medium in compressed form, and to what extent the image files are compressed.

Example Olympus Camedia C-2020: An 8 MB Smartmedia card can hold:

  • One image (resolution: 1600 x 1200 pixels, compression: no; format: TIFF)
  • 5 images (resolution: 1600 x 1200 pixels, compression: low; format: JPEG)
  • 16 images (resolution: 1600 x 1200 pixels; compression: standard; format: JPEG: JPEG)
  • 13 images (resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels; compression: low; format: JPEG)
  • 38 images (resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels; compression: standard; format: JPEG)
  • 32 images (resolution: 640 x 480 pixels; compression: low; format: JPEG)
  • 82 images (resolution: 640 x 480 pixels; compression: standard; format: JPEG)

So this means you can take the number of images times 2000 to get the number of images a 16 Gigabyte SD card can hold. This number of course varies if the resolution is 4k or greater.

What is an SD card?

An SD card (Secure Digital Memory Card) is a secure, digital memory card and is used as a storage medium as standard in smartphones, cameras and MP3 players. We explain what exactly an SD memory card is, where it comes from and why it doesn't last forever.

What is an SD memory card?

The term SD card comes from the English language and means Secure Digital Memory Card:

  • Today, SD memory cards are used as standard for all common devices such as smartphones, cameras and the Raspberry Pi.
  • They are used to store pictures, videos, music, documents and operating systems.
  • There are three different types of SD cards: SD, miniSD and microSD cards.

SD cards were developed in 2001 by the company SanDisk as storage medium:

  • In the beginning, they were primarily developed for cameras and camcorders, where they served as a small and easily exchangeable storage device.
  • In the event of a device failure, the images, videos and data are stored on the SD card and can still be used on other readers.
  • In addition, the small memory cards could be replaced quickly and easily if the memory capacity was exhausted.

Today, SD memory cards are indispensable as storage media in mobile and small devices. However, they do not last forever.
